Marmot PreCip Pants Eco Specifications
|Feature Type||Feature Specs||What This Means|
|Weight||11.4 oz. (232 g)||An average weight for rain pants. Not ultralight, not ultra-heavy. They are heavy enough that you’ll only want to bring them if you’re sure of rain, but will be glad that you did when it starts to come down.|
|Layer||2.5-Layer||Most rain pants are 2.5-layer construction. Learn more about waterproof layers in our informative rain jacket Guide.|
|Waterproof Membrane||NanoPro Eco||Marmot uses the NanoPro waterproofing in many of its jackets and pants. It’s in-house and performs well, though isn’t quite as effective as Gore-Tex or eVent. The “Eco” is new, and refers to a much more environmentally friendly construction, which we support. More on waterproof membranes in our rain jacket Guide.|
|Face Fabric||100% Recycled Nylon Ripstop||Nylon ripstop is a common material for rain pant fabric. The unique thing here is the 100% recycled construction.|
|No. of Pockets||3||The Marmot PreCip Eco Pants have two zippered hand pockets and a zippered back pocket. All are easy to reach and work well.|
|Zipper Length||Full||This version of the Pants have full, two-way zippers that allow you to open the pants from hip to foot. Excellent for breathability.|
|Water Resistant Zippers||No||While the zippers aren’t water resistant (made with waterproof technology), they do all have storm flaps or buttons to keep out water.|
|Storm Flaps||Yes, with buttons||The zippers all have storm flaps, and the leg zippers are clamped down with a button at the ankle and velcro at the hip.|
|Packs Into Itself?||No||These pants don’t pack away into a pocket, but they do get pretty small generally speaking.|
|Waistband||Elastic with Velcro||The waistband is elastic, and stretches to your size well. It also uses velcro at the hips to help secure the zipper, but this also secures your waist fit.|
|Fit||Casual/Baggy||These pants aren’t crazy baggy, but they do leave plenty of room to layer. Excellent fit for breathability.|
|Seams||Fully taped||No water will get in through seams.|
|Manufacturer Warranty||Limited Lifetime||Marmot provides an excellent limited lifetime warranty, so if key parts fail, like the zippers or elastic, send it in.|
|Retail Price||$100||A solid price for high quality, environmentally-friendly, fully-zippered rain pants.|
Gear Review of the Marmot PreCip Pants Eco
Revelation: The Moment I Knew
Venturing into the verdant Cascade foothills east of Eugene often requires full body rain protection, especially when your adventurous spirit demands an outdoor escape in the heart of Oregon’s saturated Spring season. Summer is just around the corner after all, and I can boil mercury with the hiking fever that’s coursing through my veins.
Must — twitch— get — twitch — outside!
So I laced up my boots and loaded the ol’ VW wagon with a satchel of gear and my two dogs for a rainy excursion into the hills.
Deep within the Willamette National Forest where sword fern glistened and engorged creeks spilled over banks I parked and unloaded the dogs for a romp through the wet woods.
I hadn’t worn the rain pants in the car because I didn’t want to feel stifled during the drive. Fortunately, the Marmot PreCip Pants came equipped with full zippers on both pant legs. Each zippered leg had two sliders, allowing for full foot-to-hip and hip-to-foot zipping which made sliding the rain pants over my hiking pants a cinch.
The waterproof Oboz Sawtooth boots on my feet had already been laced and double-knotted, but thanks to the Marmot PreCip’s full zippers there was no need to take off the shoes as the rain pants slipped right over the chunky boots without fuss.
I then used the button snaps to secure the protective storm flap over the zippers at each ankle. The storm flap covers the zippers as they rise to the velcro enclosures at the hip, which adjust the pants’ waist comfort. This complete full zipper setup on both legs was extremely convenient for high-speed rain gear application when I left my warm car for the rainy forest.
Comfort – 5 Stars
There was just enough room in the pant legs to be comfortably baggy. Not like 90’s hip hop baggy, but more like an appropriate amount of room to fit over a pair of bulky hiking pants baggy. The dual velcro latches at the hip are excellent for adjusting the elastic waistband’s fit for your specific needs.
Durability – 4 Stars
The Nylon Ripstop fabric (now made of recycled material!) will hold up to light bushwacking and the overall construction of the pant’s components feel solid. If cared for, the PreCip Pants should last you a long time.
Breathability – 5 Stars
The full zip double sliders on both pants legs give the Marmot Precip Pants stellar ventilation. The slider pulls remain accessible when the bottom snaps and hip velcro are latched, meaning you can keep that protective fabric over the zipper while opening large vents near your ankles or hip.
Waterproofness – 4.5 Stars
The Marmot PreCip pants performed admirably in downpour conditions. While the pockets and full leg zippers don’t have waterproof seams, each is shielded by nylon storm flaps which successfully repelled the rain. Strong, blustery winds may push some water through the teeth in heavy storms, but in all other conditions your bottom half is going to be fully protected.
The one-size-fits-all elastic waist can be loosened or pulled snug via the velcro latches. At your feet, the bottom cuffs are wide enough to fit over the top of hiking boots and can be opened further at the zipper if needed.
None, mate. These are great!
The Marmot PreCip Pants Eco Full Zip are adaptive rain pants you can adjust at the hip, at the zip, and at any time on your outdoor trip.
Where to Buy Marmot PreCip Pants Eco
We tested the Men’s Marmot PreCip Eco Pants in the Full Zip model. Marmot offers the same in a women’s model, and the only difference is the fit. Marmot also offers the PreCip Eco Pants in an ankle-zip model — look at the name of the product to see which is which.
Marmot also has the long-standing PreCip Pants, which aren’t made of the “Eco” material. While this is currently available (and what the Eco model is based on), they are phasing out the original model for better sustainability practices.
