Backpackers.com — We highlight a lot of bloggers and semi-professional backpacking experts on this site, and here is one our favorites. CleverHiker, i.e., Dave Collins, is an “ultralight backpacking” guru. He posts videos and articles with ultralight in mind, but he’s also got a real knack for simple explanations of concrete concepts.
His video, “12 Tips for Great Backpacking Adventures,” gives a realistic idea of how to prepare and plan for backpacking trips. It’s a great tool for those looking to dive into their first trip, and a helpful reminder for everyone else.
The Steps
There are indeed 12 full steps. And, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by that already, don’t fret. Everything builds upon itself, so by the time you’re at the end, you’ll feel like most of it is just common sense. Dave says halfway through the video,
“Remember, there’s no wrong way to backpack. So choose whatever style fits best with you and your group’s goals.”
Take those words to heart.
Here are the steps, in order. You’ll want to watch the video for his insight, but you can always copy these into a trip planning document as you begin to prepare.
