Klean Kanteen Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz Review

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz Overview

It’s safe to say that we have all gone through our fair share of water bottles. While you wouldn’t think you could make a bad one, or an exceptionally great one, you’d be wrong. So wrong. Ever since this Klean Kanteen Wide 27oz bottle has come into my life my hydration game has been on point.

The wide mouth of the aptly named Wide 27oz bottle beckons you to take one glug after another. While it’s not an insulated bottle, I never found my water getting too hot or cold because it’s just so easy and refreshing to drink from I find myself constantly refilling it throughout the day. While it’s a touch on the heavier side — stainless steel tends to weigh more than plastic — the wide mouth allows for any size ice cubes and the attachment of various water filters, which is great for hikes and backpacking trips. The amount of water — less than a full liter but more than your typical water bottle (16 or 24 ounces) — kept me well hydrated, which is what a water bottle should really be doing.

The Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz bottle is svelte, easy to use, highly durable, and makes drinking water downright delicious. That’s why we’ve named it our Premium Pick for the Day Hiker, Car Camper, and Wilderness Backpacker.

Gear Review of the Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz

Revelation: The Moment I Knew

Love at first gulp is the story of this bottle. I spend a ton of time on the road and can never seem to hydrate correctly (notwithstanding cans of Monster). Enter the Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth. This little bottle is just so easy to drink from. Every day I find it parked directly in my center console, next to that can of Monster. I find I can effortlessly empty about half the contents of this shiny silver bottle while driving, and that makes for one very happy (very hydrated) traveler.

The beauty lies in the simplicity of the bottle and the materials used to construct it. One lid twists open to reveal 27 ounces of gulpable water. The food-grade stainless steel means the water (or tea or coffee or whatever you put in it) will taste exactly as it should, and it goes down easy. I’ve used this bottle daily for over a month and in that time it has become second nature to have it by my bedside, in my car, and in my backpack. I don’t even consider it a choice — the Wide Mouth is coming to wherever I’m going.

Digging Deeper

Lid

Using the lid is simple and it has a burly handle for easy opening. It threads on and off easily, even with heavy gloves on. There’s a loop for gripping with your fingers, and you can tie or carabiner the bottle to your pack if you want.

The lid and the bottle.

However, nothing attaches the lid to the bottle itself. This means there’s nothing to protect against dropping the lid, and it would be pretty easy to lose it if you don’t have all your faculties. This matters a lot for backpacking, where by the end of a day we are usually tired, hungry, and not exactly all there. I prefer lids that attach to the bottle to make sure I don’t lose ‘em.

Durability

Is this thing durable? Does a bear poop in the woods? Solid stainless steel construction means a highly durable product. It has survived attacks from my husky-mix Bivy, been dropped off picnic tables, and even taken a spill from atop my Jeep Commander. The bottle is no worse for the wear. While I don’t recommend forgetting things on top of your car, it’s nice to know that it won’t break when you drive away.

The wide mouth and straightforward constructions means there’s nothing very breakable on this bottle.

Form Factor

There’s a reason you see thru-hikers use tall, slim bottles tucked into the side pocket of their pack — it looks good and is easy to handle. This bottle fits anywhere and everywhere. In my car, in my hand, on the bike, and on the pack. The shape of this bottle, which is easy to hold but also substantial, gives you no reason to ever leave it behind.

Drinkability

I’ll just come right out and say it: it’s like drinking from a golden goblet handed down from Zeus himself. Yeah, I feel that strongly, and no, I’m not saying it to sell you on anything. Maybe being fully hydrated makes me wild with joy — I don’t know. But precious life water flows like an ambling brook out of this wide mouth bottle, and there is no metallic taste or other subtleties to throw off the flavor. If I had to drink from one vessel the rest of my life, I’d choose this bottle.

Like water from the heavens.

Grievances

The only issue I have with this bottle has to do with the lid. There really should be some sort of tether on it to prevent it from being lost or dropped.

While cruising down the Million Dollar Highway outside of Silverton, CO, my mind was stunned by the scenery and I dropped the lid of the Wide Mouth somewhere in my car. It became apparent at that point that I did indeed need to pay attention to opening and closing the lid, because it took me a while to find it (you know how car crevices can be). If you’re prone to dropping things, watch out.

Final Word

Rest assured that your kidneys and liver will be running optimally after purchasing the Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz bottle. You will erase years of poor drinking decisions thanks to the wide mouth and clean taste. If you’re thirsty, you seriously need this bottle.

Where to Buy Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth 27oz

Klean Kanteen is in stores all over the U.S., and the Wide Mouth 27oz is one of their more popular models. It shouldn’t be hard to find. We like the Wide Mouth for outdoor activities more than the smaller-mouthed Klean Kanteens, and like the simplicity of the basic cap. You can find other caps for this bottle as well. The larger versions of the bottle are 40- and 64-ounces, which are much larger. While they’re great bottles, we don’t recommend for hiking or backpacking.
