Initial Thoughts on the REI Co-op Sahara Shade Hoodie

The Sahara sun hoody is an excellent choice for those seeking sun protection, breathability, and comfort. While most sun hoodies I have owned tend to be made 100% polyester the REI Sahara sun hoodie blends spandex into this product giving it just the right amount of stretch to go the extra mile. I was skeptical of this at first as it felt thicker than most sun hoodies I have owned. However, this addition proved to provide a lightweight feel still. I will note on the hottest of days I would still prefer the lighter feel of 100% polyester but, for my days on the mountain, the added thickness made this the perfect sun hoody for me.
It is also designed with 50+ UPF fabric giving it outstanding protection from harmful UV rays which is paramount if you’re spending a long day out on trail or in the mountains.
After trips with this product up Mount Rainier, Mount Adam’s, and the local Forest Park it is safe to say this will be a go-to piece in my wardrobe when I hit the trails and mountains. Keeping me cool and dry during intense hikes and prolonged wear.

Pros Cons
  • Lightweight, stretchy feel; a product that moves seamlessly with your movement
  • The thicker feel with the added spandex material might not be for everyone
  • Thumb loops on the sleeves; keep your sleeves in place and add protection to your hands
  • While I’m typically a men’s small, I found the REI sun hoody to run a bit tight in my armpits and would size up for this product to give added breathability
  • UPF 50+ protection from harmful UV rays
