The annual REI Member Sale is a highly anticipated event. We see Reddit threads start popping up in February for this sale, mostly because REI delivers reliable coupons and discounts around time this year. It’s also around the time that REI gives back dividends to members, so you probably have a bit of cash to spend.
We’ve rounded up the essence of the REI Member Sale, from the coupons to use, the best discounts on gear, and hand-picked items that we think are worth spending that dividend on.
REI Free Shipping on All Orders for 2020
Due to the worldwide pandemic COVID-19, at the time of this writing REI has updated its shipping policy to be free for any order.
Usually it’s free shipping over a certain amount purchased, but that’s not the case currently.
REI has also closed its retail stores until March 27, 2020. This means REI Online is the only way to shop for the REI Member Sale.
We’ll update this information as it changes.
REI Membership: Why and How
Like the Members Only jackets of ‘80’s lore, the current REI Member Sale is only for members. This begs the question: what is an REI Membership?

The REI Member Sale Coupons
Now to the fun stuff. You’re already a member, and you’re here because you’ve been coveting that ultralight tent.
Good news: the REI Member Sale has two broad coupons that you can put to use.
Note that these are only valid for REI Members (if that wasn’t obvious enough already).
20% Off Any Full Priced Item
This is the REI coupon you’re used to — the one that shows up around this time every year. REI offers 20% off any full priced item on their store. It’s a blanket coupon that’ll heavily discount that blanket, tent, or cooler you’ve been eyeing. You just have to be an REI Member.
Use the coupon code MEMPERKS2020 at checkout for a single full priced item.
20% Off Any REI Outlet Item
To go with the above coupon, REI is also handing out a 20% off coupon for any REI Outlet item.
For those that don’t know, REI Outlet is full of heavily discounted items.
You’ll have to hunt for the perfect item, and size and color may not be exactly what you wanted, but there is a heap of excellent product in the Outlet. Most of it is past-season colors that are going by the wayside.

REI Co-Op Discounts – 25% Off Everything
REI has discounted every single one of its in-house products with the REI Co-Op label (except for bikes). This means you can get that high-quality tent, sleeping bag, baselayer, or pad you’ve been waiting for.
We are big fans of REI Co-Op, and our staff has a few favorites, highlighted below.
Flash 22 Print Pack
The REI Flash 22 is slowly becoming the standard stuff-and-go backpack, and we reviewed and awarded it. This is because it’s generally affordable, often on sale, comes in a huge range of colors, and has all the basics someone needs to hike, explore a city, summit a peak, and travel internationally.
The Flash 22 weighs 13 ounces (just under a pound), holds 22 liters, has one main chute for gear, two external mesh pockets for water bottles or other essentials, an external zip pocket for small essentials, and a hydration bladder compartment. It compresses small and can hold up to 15 pounds comfortably.
The Flash 22 Print Pack takes the classic backpack and spruces up the colors. Get a bold one now on sale.

This collaboration between REI Co-Op and Hydro Flask means you get that special 25% off a coveted product — the 32 ounce Wide-Mouth Vacuum Water Bottle with a Flex Cap. Hydro Flask makes a mean insulated bottle, and the 32 ounce Wide Mouth remains one of the most popular models for car campers, urban hikers, and eco-conscious consumers. We reviewed the smaller 24 ounce version, and found it to be excellent.
The unique REI print on this bottle looks great, and has all the classic Hydro Flask features, including double-wall vaccuum insulation to keep your drinks hot for six hours or cold for 24, a lid handle that’s easy to grip, and food-grade 18/8 stainless steel.
If you’ve wanted a Hydro Flask bottle, now’s the time. These will sell out!

The REI Half Dome 2 Plus tent is legendary. There’s not really a comparable tent for size and cost, and despite the somewhat heavy weight it’s still a true hybrid for backpacking and camping. We have reviewed and awarded the Half Dome 2 Plus, and are stoked to see it on sale.
The Half Dome 2 Plus has 35.8 square feet of livable space, along with 22.5 square feet of vestibule space (over two vestibules), giving you more room than almost any other 2-person backpacking tent. It weighs about 5.3 pounds, has two large doors, and a special rollback fly that allows you to stargaze on clear nights.
Beyond that, REI has updated the Half Dome 2 Plus to increase head room, and the improved pole architecture does just that — two people can sit up easily in the tent.

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow – $27.99 (35% Off)
The Sea to Summit Aeros Premium is a backpacking pillow that screams comfort at a miniscule weight. It’s an inflatable pillow that weighs just 2.7 ounces (for the Regular-sized model), and compresses down to nothing. This makes storage, in a backpack or for international travel, a breeze. We reviewed this pillow.
The Sea to Summit Aeros uses what we call a kidney bean shape, so it’s like a regular pillow with an indent for your neck. You can adjust the firmness, and it has curved internal baffles to cradle your head.

If you missed the Done in an R1 video, you’ve got some catching up to do. In short, this Patagonia R1 Hoodie is legendary. We have reviewed and awarded it (along with many other institutions), and it has remained relatively unchanged for many years. It’s a breathable, active fleece that is tough as nails, works in campsites or on the crag, and layers well with everything.
The R1 Hoodie uses Polartec Power Grid polyester, which is key to the breathability and weight. The deep front zipper allows you to vent heat when needed, and the single zippered chest pocket is meant for minimal functionality. The whole coat weighs an impressive 11 ounces, and is both bluesign certified and Fair Trade Certified.

The Camp Chef Everest 2X High-pressure stove is like your classic camping stove on steroids. We reviewed and awarded a similar model, and find the quality construction, simmer, and size of the Camp Chef Everest line to be outstanding — far above the competition.
The Camp Chef Everest 2X High-pressure stove outputs 20,000 IBUs per burner, can boil a pot of water in well under 3 minutes, and has a full foot in between burners for multi-pot meals. The lid and sides are windscreens, and it all packs down rather small for a deluxe camping stove.

The ENO DoubleNest Hammock is the standard for all hammocks, and helped to launch the backpacking hammock revolution. (We’re in that now, in case you didn’t know). It weighs just over a pound, can technically fit two people for sleep, is made of robust 70D nylon taffeta, and packs down to the size of a grapefruit.
Whether you’re looking for a hammock that works for backpacking, or a simple hammock to laze around in, the DoubleNest is an excellent option.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel has been around for what seems like forever, and it’s succeeded because of its rugged, well-thought out design. It’s a large, burly duffel with impressive backpack-style straps (that detach if you want), a traditional carry handle, and well-built pulls on both sides. There are four compression straps if you need to cinch the load down, tie down points on the exterior, and two zippered compartments.
The main compartment of this 71-liter duffel is D shaped, perfect for stuffing your clothes, and it has a zippered mesh organizer in the lid. Then there’s an external zippered pocket for easy access items. The duffel is built with crazy durable fabric, and will last a lifetime.

Patagonia’s Down Jacket is a staple. We reviewed and awarded this jacket, and it remains a go-to puffy for around town, campsites, and backpacking trips. While it weighs a few ounces more than the ultralight competition, at roughly 13 ounces it’s much warmer than similar jackets due to the overstuffed 800-fill traceable goose down.
The jacket uses recycled ripstop polyester in the outer and lining fabric, there are three zippered pockets, and the fit is impeccable.

The North Face’s Stormbreak 2 tent is popular because it has everything you need in a basic 2-person tent, doesn’t break the bank, and comes with The North Face’s impressive lifetime warranty. On sale, it’s a steal.
The Stormbreak 2 has two doors and vestibules to store your gear, decent head room with extra pole support, and just over 30-square feet of space, which is quite a bit for two people these days. The tent is not ultralight — it’s about six pounds all said and done — but for the price it’s hard to find better.

Don’t let the long name of the Mountain Hardwear Exposure/2 rain jacket put you off — it’s a beast of a stretchy shell. It uses 2.5-layer GORE-TEX Paclite as the waterproof membrane, which is a good mix of breathability and weight. The jacket uses C0 PFC-free DWR, which is some of the most water resistance environmentally friendly on the market.
It has a waterproof YKK main zipper to keep out water, and is designed as a fully featured rain jacket, including a stiff brim in the hood. With two zippered hand pockets and an external zippered chest pocket, you can store what you need, and fend off the rain, all in a stretchy shell.
